Rob Collard Blog: My best ever race weekend
I’m still on such a high after a fantastic weekend, which is definitely the most enjoyable race weekend I’ve ever had with two wins, a lap record and fantastic results for the rest of the team.
I felt very upbeat ahead of Knockhill as it’s one of my favourite circuits on the calendar and I’ve performed well there in the past. As soon as I got in the car on Saturday morning for practice I knew the BMW was quick. I was fast throughout practice and was on pole for most of qualifying, although I was just pipped by Jason Plato.
On race day I felt really strong and I knew that if I could get past Plato early in the race I would have the pace to break away and build a gap. Once I built a gap I was able to sustain it and I was then confident I would control the pace. I let my team mate Tom Onslow-Cole pass to take the point for leading the lap and then regained the lead to win my first race of the day, with Tom taking second place.
The second race of the day was also fantastic. I was a bit nervous of the ballast from my win in race one but again, the car was in great shape and once I built up a gap I felt I comfortably controlled the race.
The final race was a bit of a bruiser and we suffered some damage early on. If that hadn’t have happened I think we could have challenged for a podium.
It was a massive weekend for the Collard family. Not only does it bring me to three race wins in a season (my best yet with three rounds still to go) but my son Ricky was racing in karts and also had a fantastic weekend. He qualified second, won four out of four heats and finished third overall.
I can’t believe that there are only three rounds to go until the end of the season. I’m devastated that it has gone so quickly as the car is now the best it’s been all season.
Looking ahead to Rockingham I’m not too sure how we’ll fare. We got a podium last year but the circuit suits the NGTC more than S2000 so we’ll have to wait and see. I’m going to concentrate on my fitness training to put myself in the best position possible.
